Securing Your Network

Essential steps to protect your WiFi network, your devices, and your personal information.

Setting a Strong Password

Your WiFi password is the first line of defense against unauthorized access. A weak password puts your entire network at risk.

Use at least 12 characters with a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.
Avoid dictionary words, names, addresses, or common patterns like "password123".
Consider using a passphrase — a string of random words is easy to remember and hard to crack.
Change your password immediately if you suspect someone has gained unauthorized access.

Choosing the Right Encryption

WiFi encryption scrambles the data traveling between your devices and your router so it can't be intercepted. Always use the strongest encryption your devices support.

WPA3 is the latest and most secure standard — use it if all your devices support it.
WPA2 (AES) is still considered secure and is widely compatible with older devices.
Never use WEP or open (no password) networks — they offer virtually no protection.
If your router supports WPA3/WPA2 mixed mode, enable it for backward compatibility.

Additional Security Best Practices

Beyond passwords and encryption, a few extra steps can significantly harden your network against threats.

Change the default admin username and password on your router — attackers know the factory defaults.
Set up a separate guest network for visitors so they can't access your main devices or files.
Disable WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) — it has known vulnerabilities that can be exploited.
Keep your router firmware up to date to patch security vulnerabilities.
Periodically review connected devices and remove any you don't recognize.
